Shamokin

Wastewater Treatment Plant

Shamokin-Coal Township Joint Sewer Authority invested $40 million to upgrade and expand its 7.3 MGD wastewater treatment plant to eliminate discharges of inadequately treated waste into the Shamokin Creek and to reduce nitrogen and phosphorous discharges into the Chesapeake Bay.

The new Sequential Batch Reactor Treatment System, designed and constructed by Dutchland, Inc., has a peak capacity of 8.5 MGD. It includes four new precast post-tensioned concrete SBR tanks, a post-equalization tank and a pump station.

Each of the four basins measures 92-ft. wide by 92-ft. long and is treated with an epoxy coating on the inside and outside to protect the concrete and increase the longevity of the structure. Aqua-Aerobic Systems, Inc. supplied the equipment for the SBR processes.
